4 years ago, a Mario site was
started. It had no title, it had
little content, and it never reached
fruition. That site was my first
attempt to do anything with a
computer. The shattered remains
still can be found, but the site was
quickly disbanded and left to die.
1 year ago is when it happened. July
22, 2006 is the day that Super Mario
Legacy was started and put online.
The project started in the shadows
of my other site, Super Mario RPG
Legacy.
When it first launched, it was
received with a lot of positive
feedback, but also had some
scrutiny. A lot of people thought
that it was a great idea to cover
all aspects of Mario, but some
thought it would be useless due to
bigger Mario sites that were already
out there.
Either way, Super Mario Legacy
launched on July 22, 2006 with
Version 1, which is what this page
is styled in. The layout was
different than anything I had made
before, and it was originally a
layout for a Photoshop site I was
considering.
As far as content, there was none.
Absolutely none - Super Mario Legacy
was started with a blank slate.
Well, there was all the site related
content, but none towards Mario. The
first page of content to be added
was Super Mario Bros. 3 Items. It
was a small and easy page, but we
had to start somewhere. That same
page would come back later as a
major event.
The first page of content was
followed up by some more minor
pages. At this point, I actually
started taking requests on what
pages people would like to see made.
I fulfilled those requests and soon
started to rapidly add content with
updates every week.
One of the things I added right
after the Super Mario Bros. 3 Items
page was the Message Board. True, it
probably was too early to add it
since we had no real fan base, but
with the support from Smrpg Legacy's
members, the board got started and
has continued to flourish.
August and September came and
brought the first true problems. A
couple people decided to take some
content - the Super Mario Bros. 3
Items page. Some other content such
as images was stolen as well from a
different site, bit nothing major
happened. The issues were resolved
and nothing has come up since until
recently.
Content continued to grow as the
site grew. To further expand the
site, Elemental Desires replaced
Version 1 on October 15, 2006. The
layout truly was a great one. It had
a great design and set up, and it
was real easy on the eyes. It was
one and remains one of the best
layouts I've ever created.
Elemental Desires was the true
starting point for the site. Super
Mario Legacy saw the most growth
under this version, but it also saw
the biggest setback.
And then, it happened. On
November 8th, 2006, Super Mario RPG
was announced for a remake. It was
announced as a downloadable title
for the Wii's Virtual Console! This
was a huge, huge success.
A little later, on November 25th,
the Wii Drive was started. It was
and still is the largest thing we've
ever done. We collected donations in
order to buy Nintendo products for
kids in a local hospital. Because we
were small, we didn't get a whole
lot of money collected. It was still
worth it
9 days later, Super Mario Legacy saw
the addition of the Comic Series.
The series started on December 4,
2006 and has continued to thrive. It
created a great atmosphere, because
all the characters in the comic are
forum members or people who have
influenced the site.
The new year came and another major
addition was added to the site. If
you are a long time follower of
Smrpg Legacy or anything else I have
done, you may know of the Super
Mario RPG Remake campaign. After
it's success, the message board
members and I started
www.smrpgsequel.com, a site
dedicated to getting a true sequel
to Super Mario RPG.
Of course, no such thing has been
announced. Super Mario Legacy didn't
push it enough, and we continued to
focus more on the site than the
sequel. The next 2 months were
pretty much uneventful until March.
On March 5th, the first hacking
occurred. This hit us very, very
hard. It took us down for about a
month, and it really lost us our fan
base. We just recently got to the
point where our numbers are back to
where they were.
To counter the hacking, Serenade of
Light was released on April 5, 2007.
This new version is the current
version today, with a sleek Super
Mario Bros. 3 design. It really gave
us a jolt of revival and it
continues to thrive today.
The months continued until this
July. On July 8th, our largest
content update ever occurred with
over 20 new things added. It took a
long time, but all of the content
added was well worth the effort.
And that brings us today. Today
we're going strong. We've added a
lot of content, and the fans have
responded through their own
contributions. We still don't get a
lot of visitors, but that's ok with
us - it's not our goal. We continue
to thrive and we hope to do so in
the future!
We'd like to thank all the fans of
the site, and even those who are not
fans of the site. Without both
sides, we wouldn't be where we are!
In the meantime, let's have a
special comic! It seems like a
special occasion!
